SIMPLE SUTURE LINES & SKIN FLAPS
Generally speaking the site of operation will be covered by a light cotton gauze and secured with some light-weight paper tape. This should be left untouched for 24 hours, after which time the gauze can be removed and the sutures exposed.
After 24 hours it is safe to shower on your wound but be careful to pat it completely dry at the end of your shower. Avoid fully immersing any wounds at this early stage (ie baths, swimming pools, saunas etc).
If you wish to cover the wound with a replacement gauze and tape, you will not cause any problems and you may wish to do so for cosmetic reasons. However, it will not make any difference to the wound whether it is covered or left open at this stage.
Please check with the nursing staff prior to your discharge that arrangements have been made for a follow up appointment in Dr. Knox’s rooms.
If you have had surgery on the nose then you should avoid wearing glasses for 3 days post operatively.
Smoking can irreversibly damage skin flaps and grafts and should be avoided for 3 weeks post operatively.
Should you experience any difficulty looking after the wound or have problems with the wound itself, please contact the rooms on 9553 9188.

SKIN GRAFTS ON THE FACE
The grafted area will usually have a light gauze held on with some light paper tape. This could be removed after 24 hours. Underneath this layer is generally a small piece of sponge rubber which has been sutured on top of the graft to protect and secure it. This should be left alone and kept dry until your next appointment in Dr. Knox’s office.
Please check with the nursing staff prior to your discharge that arrangements have been made for a follow up appointment in Dr. Knox’s rooms.
Smoking can irreversibly damage skin flaps and grafts and should be avoided for 3 weeks post operatively.
In many instances the skin for a skin graft on the head and neck will have been taken from behind one or other ear, and looking after this area is simple. If a head bandage has been applied you should remove this on the day after your surgery.
Beneath that bandage there is usually a piece of light cotton gauze which should be left alone and kept dry until your next appointment. If you are having problems with either the grafted area or the donor site for the graft, please contact Dr. Knox’s office on 9553 9188.

SUCTION LIPECTOMY THIGHS
1. Please take all medications as directed.
2. At the end of the operation a quite firm elasticised garment would have been put on, and this extends from generally the waist area to just below the knees, occasionally it goes down lower.
The small wounds underneath are covered with cutifilm. Occasionally, you may experience a small amount of bleeding from these areas, and if this is the case a small pad or gauze can be placed underneath the garment over the wound. If it is only quite a small ooze then one can simply leave it be. It is quite unusual to get very large amounts of oozing from this.
Please leave the garment in place for at least the first three days after the operation. If it is tight around the abdomen or other areas you can temporarily undo the zipper for some minutes then do it up again.
You may find it more convenient to shower in the garment for the first week. Use a hairdryer to dry the garment. This will save you the trouble and discomfort of getting in and out of the garment.
If you take the garment off to shower (after three days) leave the cutifilm on the wounds. Replace if they fall off.
At this time you can also wash the garment. Whilst this is drying it is best to wear firm clothing, such as lycra tights or bicycle shorts, or very firm pantihose.
3. Please rest for the first few days after your operation. You may walk around, but do not engage in any strenuous exercise.
4. Please make an appointment to see Dr. Knox as advised.
