Rhinoplasty is an aesthetic surgical procedure to reshape the nose and improve its appearance. The operation will vary depending on your physical features and your surgeon’s judgement. Local or general anesthesia may be used. Incisions are usually made inside the nostrils, through which reshaping and trimming of bone and cartilage is performed.
Results may vary from one patient to the next with the degree of improvement being largely dependent on the basic structure of your nose and skin and indeed on the tissues that the surgery aimed to correct. Changes may be subtle (as is often requested by our patients) and not overly obvious, with the aim being a more natural improved shape which blends in with your face. Your surgeon at the Aesthetic Day Surgery will discuss the results that you can personally expect at your initial consultation.
What is a Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is an aesthetic surgical procedure to reshape the nose and improve its appearance. Rhinoplasty is also performed to correct birth defects, deformities which result from injury or to relieve nasal obstruction.
How is Rhinoplasty performed?
The operation will vary depending on your physical features and surgeon’s judgement. Local or general anaesthesia may be used. Incisions are usually made inside the nostrils, through which reshaping and trimming of bone and cartilage is performed. External splints and internal nose packs may be used.
What results can I expect?
Results may vary from one patient to the next with the degree of improvement being largely dependent on the basic structure of your nose and skin and indeed on the issues that the surgery aimed to correct. Changes may be subtle (as is often requested by our patients) and not initially obvious, with the aim being a more natural improved shape which blends in with your face. Minor adjustments are occasionally required. Your surgeon at the Aesthetic Day Surgery will discuss the results that you can personally expect at your initial consultation.
Is a Rhinoplasty suitable for me?
The decision to go ahead with an anaesthetic procedure is a very personal one. The first step is a consultation with one of the qualified plastic surgeons at the Aesthetic Day Surgery. Whatever your reasons you should frankly discuss your personal goals and expectations with respect to the outcome of the procedure (both physical and emotional) with your surgeon. As with any aesthetic surgery you should always keep in mind that the desired result is improvement, not perfection.
How long will the procedure take?
Depending on the extent of the procedure, Rhinoplasty surgery may last anywhere from 1 to 2 hours. However, please keep in mind that this is only actual surgical time. To ensure the highest standard of personalised patient care, attention to detail and results, the Aesthetic Day Surgery requires you to spend appropriate time both immediately before and after the procedure within the surgery. In general you would need to allocate up to a full day of your time to allow for pre-operative procedures, the surgery itself and appropriate post operative care. (Note: this time would be in addition to your initial and follow up consultations with an ADS Surgeon).
How long will it take me to recover after a Rhinoplasty?
Recovery times do vary from one patient to the next. Upon discharge you will need to rest at home for the first 48 hours. Most patients choose to return to work at 2 weeks, however strenuous activities (such as a vigorous exercise or aerobics program or any contact sport) should not be resumed for 6-8 weeks following the procedure.
Will the procedure leave any scars?
The advanced surgical techniques applied by the surgeons at the Aesthetic Day Surgery are designed to minimise (and where possible eliminate) all visible scarring. Surgical incisions are usually made inside the nose itself and are therefore not externally visible. Where incisions are made on the outside of the nose these are again barely visible. In general, you can expect any scarring that does occur to fade considerably with time although there is an individual variation in healing time and scar formation.
What are the side effects and possible complications of a Rhinoplasty procedure?
Although each patient varies, in general swelling and bruising around the eyes is usual but will subside over a week or so following the procedure. Swelling of the nose area itself will subside more slowly with some numbness potentially being present for up to a few months. At 2 weeks when most people return to work, the swelling is not obvious to most people. Depending on the extent of the procedure, the final appearance may therefore take several months to be fully evident. Your surgeon at the Aesthetic Day Surgery will discuss side effects and any potential complications directly with you at your initial consultation.
Can all Rhinoplasty procedures be performed at the Aesthetic Day Surgery?
Most Rhinoplasty procedures may be performed as Day Cases at the Aesthetic Day Surgery. However, this will depend on the extent of the procedure, your general health and your surgeons advice. In appropriate instances, some rhinoplasty operations are performed by an Aesthetic Day Surgery Surgeon at St. George Private Hospital or Kareena Private Hospital with overnight stay facilities.
